American Literature Essay Works of art reflect the influences of the period, during which artists have created them. Any form of art exposes the trends prevailing in the period of time when the art was created. Paintings belonging to varied periods differ from each other, as the artists follow a style that is reminiscent of the period they lived in. Two such paintings which reflect the periods in which they were painted are Kindred Spirits by American Asher Durand and The Gross Clinic by American Thomas Eakins. The painting Kindred Spirits, painted in 1849 reflects Romanticism whereas the painting The Gross Clinic reflects Realism. In this paper we will analyze these two paintings and focus on the differences in ideas and attitudes expressed through the paintings. Differences The painting Kindred Spirits reflects the period of Romanticism during which the emphasis was placed on the depiction of feral nature in paintings. In this painting, Asher Durand has captured a rich and vibrant natural landscape. Although the painting depicts Thomas Cole and William Cullen Bryant, the natural landscape is more prominent in the painting. The natural features like Catskill Mountains, the Fawns Leap and the Kaaterskill Falls are incorporated in the landscape. Durand has removed himself from the painting and decided to include Cole whom he wanted to honor through his painting. But the one of the major characteristics of Durand’s landscape paintings is visible in this painting also and that is depiction of harmonious nature. â€Å"Durand’s landscapes almost always move toward harmony, and he located his own vision of landscape solidly within the aesthetic category of the beautiful, as this term was understood in the nineteenth century. † (PecK). The minute details of nature are highlighted by Durand. The depiction of a real landscape points out that Durand wished to bring forth a realist image of the nature rather than an idealized one where an imaginary landscape is depicted in a painting. The aesthetic beauty of nature is revered and admired by Durand. The painting The Gross Clinic presents a view which differs vastly from Romanticism. Being a realist painting, The Gross Clinic depicts a surgical theater where a surgery is being carried. A real event of surgery is depicted on the canvas, in spite of the fact that the scene was horrific. Through this painting, Eakins presents the reality of life in an audacious manner. The realist attitude of Eakins towards life is portrayed through his painting. The conditions in which a surgery was performed during the nineteenth century are presented in the painting. The painting Kindred Spirits provides a beautiful view of nature which is pleasant and soothing whereas the painting The Gross Clinic disturbs the mind of the looker. Eakins was more interested in the events that occurred in real life and he insisted on capturing those events in a realistic way. His painting The Gross Clinic is one such painting that focuses on a real event which is painful and disturbing but necessary to understand the life of that period. The atmosphere in a surgical theater, the naked human body and a distressed woman provide a grim but real picture of life. The display of nudity which prevailed in late Nineteenth Century is included in this painting in form of the naked human body upon which surgery is being performed. This means that they were in favor of a large government that is comprised of the people, and involved in the lives of these people. One may reflect that this does not sound very different from the influence the United States government has on the lives of its citizens, a large providing government that acts on the will of the people. In both situations the government is aware of the citizens and aims to instill equality into the societies, but this equality is to be obtained by different means and to different extents. Job descriptions are a vital part of recruiting and managing employees. These written summaries of jobs ensure that applicants and current employees have clear understanding of their roles and what is expected of them in order to be held accountable. Despite the various job descriptions and posts for new hire, it is imperative that job descriptions be thoroughly written because it will help employees understand the major areas of their job or position and also help attract the right candidates for the job. In this essay, I will be writing on the components of job description with emphasis on the role of Operations Manager with careful analysis of the important facts about the job with respect to the tasks, tools and technology, knowledge, skills and abilities, and the educational requirements for the position. Emphasis will also be placed on job advertisement and the assessment methods used when recruiting and why the methods are most appropriate especially in recruiting an Operations Manager. In today’s labor market, business environment is constantly changing and for this reason the tasks of an Operations Manager in a company is ever increasing so the job description of this position should clearly state the expectation of the job. A job description identifies characteristics of the job to be performed in terms of the tasks, duties and responsibilities to be fulfilled (Youssef, 2012). The tasks of the position must clearly and concisely communicate in the job description. For instance, the main tasks of an Operations Manager will be to oversee, direct, and coordinate all activities of the business with respect to products and services being offered by the company. In addition, the Operations Manager will be responsible for reviewing financial statements, activity report and also m anaging, training and developing employees. Once the tasks of a job is clearly written on a job description it is important to state the tools and technology requirement of the position to ensure that employees or candidates for the job understand and know the tools and technology involved to carry out the expected tasks of the job. For the position of Operations Manager in my company, the person must be proficient in the use of cell phones, laptop computers, security systems, barcode printer, and barcode scanner. In additional to these tools, the person must also be comfortable with using various software to execute tasks some of which includes accounting, electronic mail, enterprises resources planning, office suite, spreadsheet and word processing. Having  enumerated the tools and technology required for the job, the knowledge needed to be effective in the position must also be clearly stated to ensure employees and prospective candidates for the positions understand the minimum knowledge required to be successful at the job. For the operations Manager, he or she is required to have substantial knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources (http://www.onetonline.org/link/details/11-1021.00). Also should be included in job descriptions is the skills and abilities needed for the job. As an Operations Manager, he or she must be a good listener giving attention to customers and employees taking the time to understand points being made and also must have the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through written and spoken words and sentences. Lastly, a job description must include the educational requirement for the position. In most management position, a minimum of Bachelor’s degree is needed and preferably in Business or equivalent. In some instances, some company requires five years of experience in the field as an equivalent to Bachelor’s degree. Once the analysis and job description for a job is complete, the next step would be to identify recruiting method to use in selecting candidates. Since recruiting is the first stage in the hiring process, it is important to attract qualified people who have the skills and experience the job demands. To do this, I will suggest that recruitment be done through job fairs and advertising. To properly advertise a job, it is important to start by selecting the most effective job advertising medium where suitable candidate can be attracted. To recruit an Operations Manager, it will be best to place the ad on a premium job website. Once an advertising medium has been identified then the job is posted using the written job description for the position with some background information about the company. Once candidates  are identified, the next step would be to gain some valuable information about them. There are different selection methods that should be used and according to Youssef (2012) , selection methods can narrow down potential candidates. The approach and selection that I would employ in hiring an Operations Manager would be through tests and interview. The idea of using tests as selection method is to assess the personality and abilities of each candidate for the jobs. The personality test is to focus on the feelings, thoughts, and behavior of candidates as they relates to the type of enthusiasm and motivation employer is looking for in a candidate while the aptitude and ability test is to assess the intellectual performance of candidates. Interview method on the other hand, is a crucial preliminary part of recruiting process because it afford face-to-face meeting with candidates because it combines a detailed understanding of organizational requirements with a distinctive understanding of the responses, talents, qualifications, personality and character of prospective employee’s in order to make a final decision. Using interview and tests in the selection of candidate for the Operations Manager position will be most appropriate because it will afford the recruiter to be able to observe candidates attributes that will affect the job performance which include the abilities to communicate, reason and understand. This will also give the interviewer an opportunity to compare the strengths and weaknesses of each applicant. It is clear that to hire the best individual to fill a position it is important the analysis of the position be done and a written job description should be made to include the tasks, tools and knowledge, educational requirements, and the skills and abilities required to be successful at the job is needed in order to attract the best candidate. The recruiting method employed also is very vital in the process of hiring would also ensure that the best of the best candidates that applied for the job is eventually selected for the position. Being critical requires a person to draw intelligent conclusions by being somewhat skeptical and employing conscious, deliberate questioning. Goign back to the words used in the definition, being critical requires a thinker to separate the ideas, assumptions, experiences, or facts that are presented, and to choose, or decide, what he/she believes. In order to think critically, a person must be able to be be skeptical of his/her own ideas, own assumptions (things assumed to be true or things not necessarily recognized as assumed but that form the basis for beliefs), and the evidence he/she can offer for their ideas. It is certainly easier for us to be skeptical of the ideas of others, to be skeptical of ideas that are different from our own or that are new to us; it is generally more difficult for us to look open-mindedly at our own long-held beliefs, particularly those we have accepted as tr ue. The RHETI test was an enjoyable process that gave me results that couldn’t describe me any better than they did and has shed light on one of my most recent strained workplace relationships and how our personalities were like oil and water put together. My Rough Year Eleventh Grade Essay My junior year of high school was a tough one for me, especially during the fall semester. It was a really tough year academically. I did not do well on my SATs when I took them, and when I retook them several months later I did even worse. I started of the year with a C- in Spanish, one of my worst subjects, by far. My US history teacher hated me and told me I should switch out of his class from day one. I thought AP chemistry was going to be awesome but it became so much work I didn’t know what to do with myself. Some other things didn’t go my way either. I didn’t make the starting position on the varsity football team, like I had wanted. I met this really great girl though. She was everything I wanted in a friend: funny, sweet, sharing, helpful, all that stuff. And eventually we started dating. Things looked like they were turning around for old Guillermo, and then bam, it all hit me like a freight train hitting an old ford pick-up, way past its prime, stranded in the middle of a train tracks crossway. My girlfriend Cheated on me and then dumped me. Later on that week I got my worse SAT scores and the grades for that quarter came in and I saw my C-. Things were not looking awesome for me. The previous year I had played lacrosse in the spring. It’s a cool sport and I love watching it when it’s on TV, but I did not much like playing it at all. My teammates were not very nice, and I was pretty much terrible. So by the end of the fall, I was not at all looking forward to lacrosse in the spring. Well it turns out I wouldn’t have to be playing lacrosse anymore, because one of my friends, Matt, had signed me up for rugby in the spring. â€Å"Oh boy!! † is not what I said at all. I was dreadfully scared of rugby. There was no way I would willingly play. So one day I walked over with my friend, one of the captains, to the rugby coach’s office. He was also the dean of students, and a history teacher my history teacher. Being the dean he was naturally busy so my friend spoke to the coach for only a short time, telling him how I was joining the team. Coach’s only response was â€Å"OK. † So I didn’t really know what to expect from the coach at that point. I had gotten myself ready for the season by getting in the weight room with the team as much as possible. There is preseason in the winter where everybody tries to get conditioned and stronger. I was starting to get rid of my fears of the pitch and big hits the more and more I got friendlier with the team. And as it turned out, I was one of the stronger dudes on the team. By the end of the winter I was thinking that things might not be so bad after all. Before I knew it we were practicing five times a week. It was intense, but I wasn’t half bad. And then I got word that we were going to Texas for 12 days during spring break to practice and play as a team. I told my coach that I couldn’t really afford it, but he was very insistent that I go, and so he made it so I could go for less money. Texas was incredible. It’s the state where I had my first ever rugby game. I broke my nose there too, during that very same game. Before that game, I had honestly never had more fun doing anything in my entire life. It really inspired me to work harder so I could get some more playing time and make an impact on my team. And I had I knew I had it in me. I lifted with my buddy every day after practice, so I could make a difference on the pitch. And I did. Rugby became so huge for me. Rugby distracted me from silly things like girls and standardized testing. I just wanted to enjoy myself, and that’s what I did. As the year went on I got stronger and stronger, self-motivating myself to become the best athlete I could be. I got more varsity playing time as a result, and eventually I had secured myself a starting position in the sport that I love the most. I got my grades on track, and I worked really hard over the summer, and ended up starting for my football team as well. Things turned out really well for me after I had found something worth dedicating my time to, and I even met a perfect girl who I still have to support me at whatever I do. A legend once said, â€Å"Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it. † I believe I exuded what Lou Holtz was talking about. Now I might not have coached the Fighting Irish to a 12-0 championship winning season, but I definitely worked my heart out to accomplish everything I was capable of doing.
